2 ANTIQUE CORBELS
Lovely pair of antique hand carved wood corbels, each measuring 10" tall, 5-1/2" long and 2" thick. Designed is elegant and simple with a graceful line and curved loop end - they bear their original old creamy white paint over layers and layers of previous finished - I can see a hint of darker cream and even green underneath the chipped edges. Paint, as you can see, is crackled, rippled and chipping from element exposure with shrinkage lines - gives them a wonderful look.
Condition is primitive with paint loss on one side - I've removed the square nails from the back, but there are several sharp areas where the remaining nail is still mounted into the wood - this is on the back and does not show or detract. I purchased these at an estate auction in San Jose, California - I believe they date to the 1890s based on the architecture of the house which was going to be torn down. Just a wonderful antique corbel set - perfect for bookends or used as architectural accents - nice folk art appeal - lovely addition to any home, collection or display!
