    Description

NETSUKE – MYTH AND NATURE IN MINIATURE
The Avery Brundage Collection  - Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, 1981.
”Netsuke are superb miniature carvings, usually less than two inches high, that have been created by Japanese artists for over three hundred years.  During that time, they have portrayed almost every aspect of life and culture in Japan.  These tiny carvings were traditionally used to prevent the cord attached to a gentleman’s medicine box or tobacco pouch from slipping through the belt of his kimono.  Today they are highly collectible works of art.”
Illustrated with color and mostly black-and-white photographs are over 100 Japanese netsuke including pictures of their back stamp signature marks.  The book covers by chapter Katabori Type, 12 Zodiac Animals, More Animals and Birds, Fish and Other Small Creatures, Insects, Human Figures: Common and Uncommon, Mushrooms, Nuts Etc., Objects from Everyday Life, Mask and Ryusa Types, Sashi, Tusk and Kagamibuta Types, Manju Type, Multiple Function Netsuke, Signatures and Selected Bibliography.
