rear air filter for any Bunn CDS-3 machine.
Like any refrigerator, freezer, or air conditioner the Bunn CDS machines have a refrigerant system that includes a condenser.  The condenser is the part at the back of the machine that has the silver fins and the copper pipes going in and out of the sides (looks like a car radiator).  The hot refrigerant (Freon) leaving the cooling drums is pumped through the condenser and a fan blows air over the fins so the heat in the Freon can be removed.  The Freon essentially transfers the heat from the cooling drums (the evaporators) to the condenser where it is released into the room through the slits in the sides of the machine -- that's how the cooling drums get cold enough to freeze the product in the hoppers.
The condenser fan (inside the machine) pulls air through the condenser where the air picks up the heat and blows out through the slots in the side of the machine.  The fan also pulls all the dust, dirt, grease and whatever else is in the air through the condenser.  To prevent the condenser from getting clogged up (and causing a major failure of the compressor), the air filter captures the "crud" in the air before it gets to the condenser.
You should clean the filter at least once a week and always before you put a machine into service if it has been sitting for a while.  Some facilities clean their filter daily (it will clean nicely in a dishwasher).  Simply put, check the filter regularly until you know how often you need to clean it to keep it clear of crud so air can easily pass through.  If your filter has disappeared, become bent, or is too dirty to clean (you cannot get all the lint and crud out of the metal screen), you should install a new filter.  Installation requires no tools and takes about 15 seconds.

Bunn has announced that parts for the CDS-3 are obsolete and no longer include these parts in their price lists.  Bunn is no longer supplying CDS-3 parts.
