    Description

*+*+* Paden City Artware ceramic pencil holder/jug Mount Mitchell NC *+*+*
Item: One vintage pencil holder in the shape of a moonshine jug. Stoneware or ceramic jug with two colors of high-gloss glaze: Bright yellow on the top of the jug, and clear/white glaze on the cylindrical part. Lettering in gilt says:
    Pencil Parking
    Mount Mitchell
    State Park, N. C.
    Elevation 6,684
Highest Peak East of the Mississippi
Also has a gilt line where the jug begins to taper. The pencil holder has five hand-crafted holes (not including the mouth of the jug), and is made using the same mold as other souvenirs (without the holes) that were sold as (empty) moonshine jugs, typically with gilt lettering that said "Pure Corn." The interior of the jug has yellow glaze to just under the holes, the rest of the interior appears to be unglazed. Fired onto the bottom in light gilt is the makers mark: "Paden City Artware W. V". (Please see the image).
Comments:  Online sources state that Paden City Artware was founded in Paden City, West Virginia in 1940 as "F and M Artware" (after the surnames of the owners, William Ford and Lyle Mitchell), with the name changing to Paden City Artware in 1956. The company ceased production around 1985.
From the North Carolina State Parks website : "Located in Yancey County 30 miles northeast of Asheville, Mount Mitchell State Park was the genesis of North Carolina's state parks system. At 6,684 feet, the mountain is the highest point east of the Mississippi River, and an observation deck provides breathtaking mountain views on a clear day."
Dimensions: ~3 inches diameter at the base, and ~4 1/2 inches high. The inside diameter of the mouth of the jug is ~5/8 inch.
Manufacturer: Paden City Artware, Paden City, WV
    Made in the U. S. A.
Condition: Pre-owned, used. Some light wear to the gilding. The interior sides and bottom have marks from pencils that had been stored in the jug over the years. No chips, cracks, or other flaws. Please carefully examine the attached images.
