My family owned a yarn factory and these bobbins were used on Whitin twisting machines. Various fibers such as cotton, rayon and wool were twisted together and by adjusting the tension and speed, decorative effects could be created in yarns used for knitting. The finished product was spun on these bobbins. The dimensions are as follows: 9 ¼” high, 2 ½” at the base and 1 7/8 “ at the crown. The bobbins are made of wood, with an iron band around the base and crown to protect the edges. While they are reasonably clean and free of grease, they are straight from the factory floor, and have not been washed. I polished several and they look great on a bookshelf. With some weight added to the base (e.g., lead birdshot), they make great antique candlesticks. Shipping is by USPS First Class or buyer’s preference.
